In an earlier post I talked about my thoughts on the "purpose" of Twilight and the Vampire Diaries. I have to admit that I didn't really understand what our professor was really asking for when she told us to think about the purpose behind the film. Today in class, she explained that she really wanted to know our thoughts on HOW the film was able to entertain it's audience. We talked about how the story (Twilight) revolves around a type of forbidden love;one purpose of the film is to root for love despite difficulty.
We also talked about how it aims to scare and thrill the audience, but I think that is less important than the forbidden love theme. Forbidden love seems to be a popular topic among authors throughout history. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet being the first story to come to my mind. I think it's an important theme to people because it teaches, or tries to teach, that no matter how large the hurdles, love CAN always triumph. Now obviously it didn't work out for Romeo...but that's because he was an idiot. I mean if he'd wait like....twenty minutes to carry out such a rash decision as taking his own life, the story would have had a happy ending.
A lot of stories have been about forbidden love, and over the years that has been the most entertaining story. I agree that all of the stories do have love triumphing in over all odds.
